Worm bomb hits today
The Kama Sutra worm detonates today, and in case you've been on vacation or haven't had time to get the scoop, the worm promises to destroy Windows PC files on the third Friday of every month starting February 3. While there's been two weeks of time to prepare and hopefully protect systems, understanding what this malicious worm wants to do and how it goes about doing it can prove useful in fighting off future malicious threats. It not only overwrites files, but it can disable all those great security protection applications you've laid in place.

- WeirNet has moved . . . sort of:
In an effort to make all of our resources more accessable to you, our customers, we have combined our business office "upstairs" and our technical offices "downstairs". We're still at 3200 Main Street in Weirton, our phone numbers and our GREAT customer service haven't changed, but for the first time since 1998, we have a place big enough to house all of us! We are now in the suite and offices formerly occupied by Expert Travel. Our new office is more easily accessable from both entrances to the building:
- From the side parking lot, just enter the glass door and go down the steps
- From the Main Street entrance, just bear left, go down the hall, down the steps and again down the hallway
- Sat, Mar 30 2002

- Norton AntiVirus 2002 scanning bypass: A recently released advisory indicates multiple methods by which a malicious e-mail can bypass the virus checking functions of Norton AntiVirus version 2002. For more information, see the reference URL below.
Confirming these vulnerabilities, the vendor basically stated that client/desktop antivirus protection will catch the viruses that bypass the e-mail scanner.

The effect of that problem would be that some customers using those lines may have occasionally seen busy or fast busy signals. We apologize for any inconvience.

- Recent local sightings of W32.Myparty worm
WeirNet strongly recommends using anti-virus software. Most current anti-virus software products are able to detect and alert the user that an intruder is attempting to install a Trojan horse program or that one has already been installed.
In order to ensure the continued effectiveness of such products, it is important to keep them up to date with current virus and attack signatures supplied by the original vendors. For more anti-virus info see: http://www.weir.net/support/faq/virus/
- Jan 25th - 26th
- We've experienced intermittent but progressively worsening problems on our backbone connection to the New York NAP. Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all been working on their pieces of the circuit and have addressed several network issues between here and there but have not yet completely solved the problem. This has forced us to move all routing we normally do through that circuit over to our other backbone circuits until the problem is successfully resolved. At peak times, our local customers may see latency in requests from certain servers as we are forced to route requests in a less than optimal manner.
- Jan 1st
- Offices will be closed in observance of the New Year holiday.
